Protection against symptomatic COVID-19 begins to decline about a month after initial vaccination, while immunity against severe COVID-19 remains elevated for about six months, according to a recent study by scientists from Penn State College of Medical. In the largest study to date, researchers analyzed data from 7 million unvaccinated and vaccinated people aged 12 and older. The researchers determined that the vaccines offered significant protection against COVID-19, but their effectiveness declined over time. The results showed that after full vaccination, immunity against COVID-19 infection declined from 84% after the first month to 22% after five months or more. Those who received the Moderna vaccine had the levels of protection, according to the results. The researchers said the vaccines remained 90% effective against severe COVID-19 for up to six months. But protection against severe COVID-19 was weaker for people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The study also found that immunity to COVID-19 waned faster for people aged 65 or older, regardless of which vaccine they received. The researchers had no data beyond six months, and the study did not include data on recalls. Read the full study here.

Protection against symptomatic COVID-19 begins to decline about a month after initial vaccination, while immunity against severe COVID-19 remains high for about six months, according to a recent study by scientists from Penn State College of Medicine.

In the largest study to date, researchers analyzed data from 7 million unvaccinated and vaccinated people aged 12 and older.

The researchers determined that the vaccines offered significant protection against COVID-19, but their effectiveness declined over time.

The results showed that after full vaccination, immunity against COVID-19 infection fell from 84% after the first month to 22% after five months or more.

Those who received the Moderna vaccine had the highest levels of protection, according to the results.
