ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, October 18, 2022 — The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) announced its intention to launch ADIA Lab, an independent research center dedicated to fundamental and applied research in data and computational sciences. From its base in Abu Dhabi, ADIA Lab will officially launch on December 2, 2022, the 51st National Day of the United Arab Emirates.

ADIA Lab will operate as an independent and autonomous entity, with broad research objectives that are not specific to investment-related applications, designed to explore the latest trends and technologies in data and computer science in all major fields of studies.

This will include cutting-edge research in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance and quantum computing, with applications in areas such as climate change and energy transition, blockchain technology, financial inclusion and investment, decision-making, automation, cybersecurity, health sciences, education, telecommunications and space.

ADIA Lab will partner with academic and other institutions around the world to design educational programs, sponsor research projects and fund reproducible research, offer scholarships and internships, organize seminars and organize competitions and prizes for the best article.

The launch of ADIA Lab will provide ADIA with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with global experts in the data and computer science community, while helping to embed a science mindset throughout its organization. ADIA employees will also have the opportunity to attend ADIA Lab seminars and academic programs, and conduct joint research projects.

ADIA Lab will play a proactive role in contributing to the continued development of Abu Dhabi’s digital ecosystem, with a focus on projects that can lead to the creation of start-ups.

ADIA Lab will appoint an advisory board of global thought leaders from a variety of data- and compute-intensive scientific disciplines to advise on the development and oversee the implementation of its research agenda and programs .

Dr. Horst Simon has been appointed director of the ADIA laboratory. Dr. Simon joins from Berkeley Laboratory (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) where he served for more than 10 years as the Laboratory’s Assistant Director for Research and Director of Research. Most recently, he served as Senior Advisor to the Director of the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, a US Department of Energy program.

Dr. Simon has twice received the Gordon Bell Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for outstanding achievement in high-performance computing, and has received both the ACM SC Test of Time Award and the Computational Award from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Science and Engineering Career Awards. He is a member of the publishing team for the semi-annual TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers and is a member of SIAM.
