Subscriber data is a crucial commodity for network operators around the world, as it can be leveraged to deliver personalized services and optimize applications in the market based on subscriber preferences. This creates opportunities for new, highly targeted applications and services. Optimal leveraging of subscriber data also facilitates revenue expansion as well as improved customer loyalty and profitability.
However, access to subscriber data is often a challenge for network operators. This is largely because subscriber data is stored in a non-unified, distributed architecture that consists of a variety of different network elements and services. This legacy subscriber data architecture approach is often vendor-specific, making it costly to establish and maintain a consolidated view of operational data.
Subscriber data management (SDM) systems solve these problems by unifying subscriber data in a central repository. With this repository, SDM solutions unify cross-domain subscriber data, including identity, location, presence, authentication, services, and access preferences. These data elements can feed multiple applications through an API interface.
An important aspect of SDM is the 3GPP-defined Unified Data Repository (UDR) function, which is at the heart of data storage and retrieval in 5G networks. UDR is also at the core of 5G Service Based Architecture (SBA) approach, including application, subscription, authentication, service authorization, policy data, session binding and application state information.
We estimate that carriers can save over 50% OpEx (associated with customer provisioning, administration, and OSS/BSS applications/services) with next-generation SDM compared to legacy non-UDR mechanisms for subscriber data management. In addition to OpEx savings, SDM solutions allow carriers to reduce churn by allowing carriers to personalize services, improve marketing campaigns, and improve overall revenue and customer retention by earning detailed customer information.
In addition, SDM also allows operators to establish themselves as subscriber identity brokers through SDM APIs. Driven by internal use within carrier services and identity brokerage, SDM APIs are expected to become a critical asset for the realization and operation of 5G SBA-based services.
As network operators continue to invest in network modernization and migrate networks to 5G, vendors in telecommunications and IT-centric database domains are competing for SDM market share . As part of building the 5G network, global carriers have pledged to continue the migration to a unified data environment that began with LTE networks. As a result, we expect SDM vendor revenues to reach $10.87 billion by 2027. North America is poised to make the most of this trend, becoming a $4.9 billion market by 2027.
